Summary

An exuberant, hilarious memoir about a woman who pauses her successful career for a year and explores the "What If" jobs of her dreams。

On the cusp of turning forty, Alisha Fernandez Miranda has climbed to the peak of personal and professional success, but at a price; she's overworked and exhausted。

Bravely, Miranda decides to give herself a break, temporarily pausing her stressful career as the CEO of her own consulting firm。 With the tentative blessing of her husband and eight-year-old twins, she leaves her home in London to spend one year exploring the dream jobs of her youth, seeking answers to the question, "What If?"

What follows is a spirited and hilarious journey for Alisha - and the reader。 Contending with her lack of experience (and the onset of a global pandemic), Alisha gofers for two high-profile Broadway productions (and nearly tramples Stephan Sondheim), attempts to master a fitness regimen called Voga (a cross between yoga and "voguing"), feigns confidence while handling multi-million-dollar artwork at Christie's, and literally sets her shirt on fire while serving rack of lamb in a posh hotel on Scotland's remote Isle of Skye。 Her experiences are at once challenging and humbling, and push the boundaries of what Alisha thought she was physically, mentally, and emotionally capable of。 Alisha's "What If" year reveals that she can achieve success on her own terms by embodying the spirit of the intern: never stop learning, be flexible, and understand that failure is a prerequisite for growth。

For anyone who's ever felt stuck in a rut, My What If Year proves that it's never too late to say yes to second chances and explore the roads untraveled throughout your life。

Well written, laugh out loud book。 Once I identified my jealousy of her wonderful parents, and her ability to make all great choices, I dismissed that jealousy and truly enjoyed her year of internships。 She seems to be a very down to earth person who would be a great friend to have。 Thank you Alisha, for putting your life out here for everyone to read, and thak you to zibby books for having copies of this book for booksellers at Seattle Winter Institute 2023。 I will carry it in my bookstore, and Well written, laugh out loud book。 Once I identified my jealousy of her wonderful parents, and her ability to make all great choices, I dismissed that jealousy and truly enjoyed her year of internships。 She seems to be a very down to earth person who would be a great friend to have。 Thank you Alisha, for putting your life out here for everyone to read, and thak you to zibby books for having copies of this book for booksellers at Seattle Winter Institute 2023。 I will carry it in my bookstore, and will recommend to customers。 。。。more

Interesting premise of pursuing things later in life that you wished you had explored early on。 I would recommend this for those who need the inspiration to go after their passions and pursue every opportunity possible。 Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC。

A lot of us have done a "What If?" when it comes to our life choices wondering about that path not taken -- but we never follow up on it。 Alisha Fernandez Miranda does。 My What If Year details Miranda's bold decision to leave her CEO position for a year sabbatical to pursue her "what if's。" During this year, Miranda takes on a number of unpaid internships ranging from behind the scenes work on two Broadway plays to a stint at a luxury hotel on the Scottish Isle of Skye。 Miranda gives her reader A lot of us have done a "What If?" when it comes to our life choices wondering about that path not taken -- but we never follow up on it。 Alisha Fernandez Miranda does。 My What If Year details Miranda's bold decision to leave her CEO position for a year sabbatical to pursue her "what if's。" During this year, Miranda takes on a number of unpaid internships ranging from behind the scenes work on two Broadway plays to a stint at a luxury hotel on the Scottish Isle of Skye。 Miranda gives her readers an unvarnished account of her ups and downs during this year, which unfortunately was compounded by Covid。 Miranda is fortunate that she was financially able to take this sabbatical -- something a lot of people wouldn't be able to do。 This is a fun and engaging read about change and the ability to embrace both our strengths and weaknesses。 Thank you to the publisher and #NetGalley for this ARC of #MyWhatIfYear。 。。。more

As she was about to turn forty, she and a few friends met in a bar and talked about their career dreams they had as young adults。 The conversation caused Alisha to create a What If Year。 As the CEO of a social media consulting company and the mother of twin eight-year-olds, her incredible husband agreed to keep their business and their family functioning while Alisha explored different careers through unpaid internships。Alisha left her home in London in February 2020 and flew to NYC for a 30 day unpaid internship with a Broadway production team。 Theater and musicals had been a huge passion for Alisha while growing up。 Then the COVID pandemic hit while she was in New York City and the theaters were shut down。Alisha returned to London and she poignantly describes homeschooling her children in-between handling work conference calls and emails。 She decided to explore an unpaid internship in the fitness industry since online fitness exploded during the pandemic。 Part of her internship included taking online fitness classes from competitors。 She was taking 10 - 12 fitness classes per week。 A phrase that resonated with her during this time was "get off the hot mess express。"She also did unpaid internships in the art industry and in the hospitality industry。The book opens with "Whatif" by Shel Silverstein:Last night, while I lay thinking here。Some Whatifs crawled inside my earAnd pranced and partied all night longAnd sang their same old Whatif songThis book begs the question for every reader, "What are you going to do with the time you have left?"Highly recommend! 。。。more

I read this book in two days and thoroughly enjoyed it! Alisha Fernandez Miranda wrote a very relatable book that is so relevant in the post-pandemic world and she put a light hearted spin on her story。 This book is funny and poignant and could apply to all ages。 As an early retiree, I am seriously thinking about trying internships as a way to keep myself learning and engaged。

I was very happy to receive an ARC of this book。 This is a great, entertaining personal memoir of a very novel project。 It makes you actively consider what would happen if you could just try a new career on to see how it fits。 I admire the self-reflection and honesty that author shares, especially since this project overlapped with COVID。 I appreciate the leap of faith she took and it reminds us that we are ultimately in control of our own path, should we choose to make a change for ourselves。

I was really looking forward to reading this book - the premise sounded promising - but it fell flat for me and screamed of privilege (which the other does mention later in the book)。 It was probably just too soon for me - a mother, who worked my butt off during the lockdown phase of the pandemic to keep my job and keep my kids alive - to read a book about frivolous longings during a global pandemic。

Despite this, Miranda interns on two Broadway shows in NYC, does media and research for an online fitness company in London, learns how to navigate the world of high-end modern art sales (also in London), and works in three different roles at a high-end resort on an island in Scotland。 Through all of these experiences, she finds the joy in learning, making mistakes, and not always needing to be the expert。 She gives herself permission to be human and to prioritize her own happiness, which is a lesson that a lot of moms could use。 As a working, 40 year old, mom of two, I found Miranda’s “coming of middle age” memoir to be relatable and inspiring and her voice is funny, heartfelt, and sincere。 This is a must read for women everywhere and especially for working moms! 。。。more

Alisha was burnt out on her life as a wife, twin mom and career woman。 So she gave herself permission to take a year to explore some of the other directions she had thought about taking her life - hospitality, fitness, and art。 This memoir details all of her intern experiences, managed while in the midst of a pandemic。A cute, relatable story that gives us 40-year old women permission to explore the “What If” question that’s often lurking just beneath the surface。 4⭐️

Am I happy with the life I’m living right now? What if I made a different choice? It takes a certain level of courage to ask these questions and even more to think about the answers。 Harvard graduate, CEO and mother of twins, Alisha Fernandez Miranda found approaching 40 and questioning her life’s trajectory。 “But what if this was all I was ever going to achieve? Was I finished trying new things, having new experiences, getting those butterflies in my tummy when I was nervous about pushing my own boundaries? I worried that I had made all the big decisions I was going to make, took the big risks and that everything was going to be the same from here on out?” On the surface, she appeared to have it all but a part of her wondered if she was missing out on something。 After a fair amount of soul searching, she decided to take a year off and live life as an intern, trying out different professions that had not been pursued in her past。 As luck would have it, she would make this decision right before the start of the pandemic, which complicated the project but she managed to work as a Broadway production assistant, an art dealer, a fitness instructor and in a small Scottish Inn。 Each internship provided both frustrations and learning opportunities。 As time passes, it becomes more difficult to think about taking risks or making changes in your life。 Comfort becomes an addiction and the fear of failure seems to grow over time。 Alisha is living proof it’s never too late to try something new and sometimes you need to do the thing that scares you the most。 The author now hosts a podcast, Quit Your Day Job and I’m really looking forward to reading more of her writing。 。。。more
